The Love Letter Jack Finney

The Love Letter (TV Movie 1998) Poster

Wonderful, charming. For all of usa romantics!

My married woman and I were very tired, after a long mean solar day of work and coming abode from dancing. We decided to have a quick await at the Television receiver movie I taped, to run across if it was worth keeping. What a surprise: it kept us awake late at night, in spite of our tiredness. A lovely flick!

In that location are a few annoying flaws. The music at the first was out-of-date and I don't know how the director let a few shoddy scenes skid by, merely they were probably on a tight budget. These are mainly due a script that, while generally good, was as well stilted in parts. However, considering this is a made4TV flick, information technology is exceptionally expert.

So get your loved one, cuddle upward, and have permit some warmth into your hearts with this petty gem.

Top-notch Time Travel / Romantic Fantasy

Unknown in Europe, this motion-picture show was recommended by someone from the states and I certainly wasn't disappointed once I'd received the DVD and watched it! On a par with "Somewhere in Time" and like in some respects to "A Message from Clemency" which was one of the "New Twilight Zone" episodes, this film is beautifully made and a real pleasure to watch over and over again. In fact nowadays, many of these so-called "TV Movies" are actually better than those made for the movie theater !!

Plots in time-travel movies cannot of course exist logical just this moving picture had a very reasonable and believable plot ( bar, of course the way the letters were supposed to travel in time ) merely when you watch films of this nature, there is no signal in worrying about details of that kind.

The sets and picture quality were magnificent and I establish the ending totally satisfactory although I would have peradventure wished the movie to continue on so that we come across romance developing between Campbell Scott and the lady in the cemetery. I had already seen Campbell Scott in a picture chosen 'Dying Immature ' and do similar this player very much. This film was just suited to me as I don't really like time-travel movies with tons of special effects as they dont really appear believable ! So I hope people will make more than movies similar this considering at present it is true that they are rather sparse on the basis. And we exercise need doses of romantic fantasy to whisk united states out and above of the dreariness of modern life !!

It's a wonderful, wonderful movie

I love romance movies. I'll spend slow weekends just popping them in the VCR. I love time travel romances and afterward watching SOMEWHERE IN TIME for the 10th fourth dimension spent an entire weekend debating where "the watch" originated with my husband and friends. I happened to catch THE LOVE LETTER on cable one rainy afternoon and past the end of the movie I had gone through an entire box of Kleenex. The "romance" between Scotty and Lizzie was and so touching. I did think that the poems Lizzie wrote were pretty sappy merely nosotros're talking about the 19th century hither. Whenever you watch a time travel picture or read that blazon of book, you lot actually have to learn to suspend atheism, but the fashion this moving-picture show was handled information technology seemed so possible. That they could actually feel each others presence across time was so beautifully handled. The music was hauntingly beautiful also. My only quibble with the whole story was if the time portal worked from the past to the present, why couldn't it work from the present to the past. I felt so sad that Lizzie had to live all those years without Scotty. All in all it's a great motion picture. I would, and accept, recommended it to anyone who loves romance.

An Exceptionally Well Made TV Movie

I came beyond this title in the IMDb every bit I take so many others -- by blow. The concept intrigued me, then I browsed Amazon.com and was lucky enough to find a relatively inexpensive used re-create.

I must acknowledge, to begin, that I was a bit biased, in that I am a time-travel fanatic at heart. So, when a movie is themed equally such, I am a sucker for it from the commencement. Though the actual traveling in this pic is mostly by manner of a seemingly "magic" desk and an unusually efficient U.S. Mail service (Wouldn't that be overnice?), it nevertheless fell within my realm of my fascination.

I won't recap the story, as the IMDb does a good chore of that already. My only comments are of the quality of the film. I was pleased with the motion picture overall. Myself beingness a 29 year onetime male, anyone who sees this movie volition plainly tell you that I was not the demographic that they were aiming for. It is a love story and I plant myself very drawn into it, even with it's implausible premise -- but, nosotros must recall that this motion picture IS a "fantasy" and it should exist viewed with that in mind. Those who are looking for a good sci-fi flick should await elsewhere, because science does into enter into the picture hither. Information technology is a human story nearly two people who are separated from each other by time. It is well acted, beautifully filmed and well worth a await if you tin can option it upwards at your local library, video store or online somewhere.

I give information technology 9 out of 10. My merely critiques would exist Scotty's coma 'dreams' which left me scratching my caput a scrap and the catastrophe -- but I won't spoil it for you. Watch, relish and you be the judge.

Time-Travel Fantasy...No Infinite Ship Needed ! 1 of the Best !!

"The Honey Letter" was written by Jack Finney. If you lot are familiar with his classic time-travel novel "Time And Again", y'all volition definitely love this Television version of his short-story "The Beloved Alphabetic character".

The leads are very competent. Campbell Scott, for those who don't know, is the son of the belatedly George C. Scott...one of America's Greatest Role player'southward. Campbell has come into his ain, and does very well. Jennifer Jason Leigh and Daphne Ashbrook are perfect as the female time-travel counterparts.

Remember: this IS a fantasy. Merely a beautifully synthetic 1 at that. If y'all've ever wanted to reach back into the past for a long-lost beloved, this story will surely tug at your middle strings. And the ending is "simply right" and very touching in its ain manner...there may not be a dry eye in the room when it'due south over with. And that'south okay.

PS: Jack Finney as well wrote one of the greatest Sci-Fi Thrillers of all-time: "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers". In improver, if you like "The Love Letter" and want more of the aforementioned, care for yourself to the above-mentioned "Time And Over again" ! Fourth dimension-Travel, Romance, Mystery, Fantasy...all wrapped-up in the full-blown novel that has become a true Cult Classic.

Oh, this was just and then beautiful

It really says something when a Television station similar the Authentication station can fund a better, more than emotional and memorable film than 99% of the tripe that passes for entertainment today in the movie theaters. This niggling moving picture has real heart and class. Delight seek it out and watch it.

I loved the picture. Filmed on location in Virginia (not Massachusetts where it is supposed to take place), and even showcasing a wonderful re-enactment of the battle of Gettysburg, and a mannerly, conceivable bandage, it just captivates yous immediately and yous are fatigued into its time travel plot device without any problem. It'southward probably near like to "Somewhere In Time" that manner, which was also lovely to look at, and boasted those period locations and authentic apparel.

Campbell Scott was superb equally Scotty, who buys an antique desk complete with old dear letters addressed to a "mystery man" from the 1860'due south. Jennifer Jason Leigh was lovely as Elizabeth Whitcomb, and you experience for her graphic symbol all the manner. When she stops on the stairs and reaches out for Scotty (more than 100 years away from her in altitude in the future), I cried. It was so bittersweet.

Estelle Parsons was great every bit Scotty'due south mom, ever overnice to encounter her. She'south such a natural actress. Daphne Ashbrook was also fantabulous every bit Scotty'southward fiancé, who unfortunately gets injure equally the growing relationship between Scotty and Elizabeth develops. She shows a existent vulnerability hither and doesn't deport revengefully. Wonderful.

If I would change anything I would have had the film end with the grave scene, and not with the girl and her domestic dog, to do otherwise is to suggest that Scotty won't be as faithful to Elizabeth as she was to him.

ten out of 10.

Addition: And to the commentator janeellen, above, who was critical of my review, I would add that even if the story was trying to propose reincarnation, it doesn't work, and it makes the story less poignant to insist on it. Merely every bit with cloning, no ane is EXACTLY the aforementioned person or being, or has EXACTLY the same SOUL. Then for Scotty to go off at the end with the modern girl and her dog, a girl without the aforementioned 19th century sensibilities or soul as Elizabeth Whitcomb, is a disappointment.

Scotty should stay just every bit true to the memory of ELIZABETH through the years, as she remained true to him until her expiry. That would accept been the PERFECT catastrophe.

This is a gorgeous movie and a lovely and well told story

Campbell Scott (Singles, Dying Young) "Scotty Corrigan" is engaged. He and his fiancee go to an antique store. He falls completely in dearest with this beautiful nineteenth century desk. He is not certain whether he can beget it, but he buys information technology anyhow. He finds a letter in a small secret compartment in the desk and tells his mother virtually it. His mom was really absurd! Mom told Scotty almost the possibility of going back in fourth dimension. She goes out and gets the right ink fabricated in the nineteenth century, and finds out the address of oldest Mail Office in town, built in nineteenth century. Scotty begins respective with this woman Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hudsucker Proxy) "Lizzie." I was amazed how I was glued to the idiot box. Those intriguing stories most the possibilities of going through the time tunnel, possibilities of reincarnation, romance, actually become to me. This is a very intertwined story of the unfulfilled love between a civil state of war soldier and Elizabeth. I barbarous in honey with the story and had to order the tape. Information technology is just a lovely story. There was non even electricity in those days! I would love to elaborate on the story only I practise not desire to give it way, because of those have not seen it yet. I highly recommend information technology. If y'all picket this movie, it is more than likely than not that you will be glued to the goggle box. This is what I consider dandy and solid story telling. James S. Henerson won WGA Laurels Adapted Long Form for the teleplay/story. My Favorite Quotes: Lizzie "The laws of nature for whatever reason have been suspended... write presently before the police force of nature reset themselves." "Y'all have no right to get involved in a life that has already lived." Lizzie: "Tell me what it means to low-cal up like a Christmas tree." Scotty: " Ben Franklin invented electricity to glow like a Christmas tree is to glow with pleasure." Favorite Scene: The dog at the cemetery ...

Love can Conquer Mountains but can it conquer Time..?

I gave this movie the highest rating for at the end there is two questions that the viewer is left to answer.....Why did these events happen and why to these ii people..? The answers are at that place but yous are left to notice them.

An antique desk-bound is purchased. Within, in a secret compartment, is a letter written 100 years earlier. The letter is to a phantom man. The secret love created in the mind of a alone girl. A young mans finds the letter and feels the pain the girl who wrote must have felt when waiting for a love that wasn't at that place.

A strange occult mother convinces her son to answer the alphabetic character and comes upward with a scheme to do it. Thus begins a love affair where the participants are separated past 100 years in time.

A fascinating romance.

I first saw The Beloved Letter of the alphabet on Hallmark Hall Of Fame in 1998. I found information technology to be the most fascinating dear story I had always seen. As much every bit I was impressed, I gave it petty thought until recently when I ran beyond a re-create of information technology at the library. I took it domicile and lost count of the number of times I played it. Each time, I found something new and experienced a different emotion. Perchance because of this story, I've become very interested in the Ceremonious War and spend much fourth dimension doing research on the subject. I had to become the video and I have.

Back to the story...Jennifer Jason Leigh and Campbell Scott are both cracking actors. They make you believe that they are the characters they portray. With them, you run the gamut of Scott's and Lizzie's emotions, the strongest beingness their love for each other. This romantic fantasy is i I would recommend to anyone who has the power to remove themselves from this earth and retreat to the fantasies of this story. They volition never forget information technology. Sentry it when there is no distractions.

a personal review...

"The Beloved Letter" is a deeply touching, wonderful picture show. I love the story, beginning and foremost. It has been well written, and information technology is very conceivable, in the manner that it is presented...in a fantasy type fashion. The director gets the virtually out of his actors, and in such a style that keeps you glued to the television. Miss Leigh and Mr. Campbell are Elizabeth and Scott...beyond time, in the nowadays, in the past, wherever they are!

I call back that the thing that I like well-nigh about this moving-picture show is the Ceremonious War fourth dimension menstruation, that Scotty's letters travel back to, and the fact that he and Elizabeth are so believable in their actions and reactions. The settings are beautiful, the costumes divine! I accept seen this 8 times, and I never tire of it!

Little Gems Do Exist.

Warning: Spoilers

In one case in a great while you go to the library hoping you lot volition find a gem of a pic that volition surprise you. This picture show is that jewel. it mesmerizes you from start to finish. I take always been the incorrigible romantic and this movie touches you. Based on a brusk story by Jack Finney, who seems to be engrossed in writing stories that transcend time, for case his novel "Time And Again", this film does non disappoint. The ending was perfect, but yet you did not desire it to end, and that the story would keep, and show the romance develop betwixt the Scott Denby character and the girl he meets in the graveyard, (Beth), who is similar Elizabeth Whitcomb, his link to the past. However, I am very satisfied how the movie concluded. Information technology gave me that lilliputian tear of happiness, and the boost to write virtually information technology here. I highly recommend thsi flick to all the lovers out there, who will find that honey really has no limits.

Soul Mates

Ultimately the movie is about Soul Mates... two people fated to detect each other life subsequently life later life gone past... and how that simple tether binds them beyond fourth dimension and space for eternity...

A definite tearjerker, the flick is not flawless, it will leave you with a few questions, generally belittling questions concerning plot points, but I would still recommend the film, and if you relish movies similar this, here are some others I would love to recommend.

1. The Fountain ii. Somewhere in Fourth dimension 3. Frequency 4. Information technology'due south A Wonderful Life 5. Upside Downwardly 6. Time after Time 7. The Fourth dimension Car 8. The Triangle

My favorite chick-flick!

This is is a real tear-jerker, the type of show I thought I was immune to. Turns out I was more than weepy than my wife throughout the whole pic. What a neat story and the actors were superb. I found myself to be in love with Elizabeth Whitcomb and despising David Duke'south (RIP)character. I truly felt distressing for Scott's fiance, all the same, and could empathise completely with her conclusion that Scott was perhaps a piddling bit nuts.

I rated this evidence a 9 (out of 10), downgrading only because the railroad railroad train used was common around 1915, not 1863. Why couldn't they have used a iv-4-0 American locomotive and lite weight wooden coaches typical of the Civil State of war era? Other than that minor glitch, the flick was exceptionally well washed and will occupy a prominent place in my movie collection.

This is a lovely movie -- the story is well-thought and although it seems tortuous, they pull it off nicely and arrive entirely believable. I very much relish Leigh and Scott together. If y'all are a romantic - this flick is for you.

What a story! A beloved that transcends time. If yous are a romantic you are in for a care for when you lot watch this film.

Campbell Scott and Jennifer Jason Leigh play two people who autumn in beloved by corresponding with one some other. This would not exist totally unheard of except that she is living during the civil war period and his is living in the present 24-hour interval. He buys an antique desk which belonged to her and finds a letter hidden in one of its secret compartments. The letter of the alphabet was written for no one to read - she is simply venting about her life (she is unmarried, 28, and expected to midweek a man she does not love). Magically they start writing each other and gradually fall in love.

To tell you lot anymore would be giving away some major plot lines. But exist prepared for the last five minutes and brand sure you have plenty of kleenex on hand. I guarantee y'all are going to need them!!

Comments from a guy

Just saw this with my wife on TNT this evening. The commercials drove me nuts considering I didn't desire to look to see how the movie turned out. A skillful mixture of happy and sad with a artistic ending. A very original storyline. Campbell Scott is especially good in this role because he looks like a normal guy and is so serious. If you similar him in this, be sure to encounter The Spanish Prisoner which stars Steve Martin in an unusual bad guy roll. I LOVED this movie (my wife did also) and I just at present clicked through to Amazon.com to purchase it for our personal collection. Probably one of my meridian ten movies of all time.

A superb romantic drama

This was by far the most enthralling romantic drama I have always seen. Throughout it at various times I was in tears. It was so very touching. I didn't consider it as a fantasy for information technology was then genuinely portrayed that I believed every scene. I gave information technology a 10, but would accept given it a 10+ if possible.

A Great Film for Romantics

This flick requires you to accept that letters can move through fourth dimension. If you will just have this and your romantic, you lot like New England in fall so just sit down back and enjoy. The male lead is already engaged at the start only in the correspondence crossings back over 130 years he sees that there is something missing which is the aforementioned that his correspondent yearns for.The correspondence is started past his encountering a secret letter written in 1863 put in a agency he bought which once belonged to a 29 year erstwhile lady who wrote the letter and hid it dreaming of a lover she longed to exist and come into her life.He replies using contemporary writing paper, ink and stamps the mail box beingness a long surviving one.The letter reaches the writer who following the stupor replies by leaving replies in the drawer.Falling in love he encourages her to keep her poetry. The story involves tragedy in the ceremonious war just in the finish the ending is in the present.Watchers may miss the concluding words with the music but it simply confirms the situation. At present where tin I discover a agency such as the one used. The scenes are brilliantly pigeon tailed, the screenplay writer did a brilliant job and must have taken a lot of care with this brusque story by Jack Finney.

Very Enjoyable

Read the blurb and hoped it would be better than Meg Ryan'southward Kate & Leopold. Thankfully it was bright, especially for a TV film. Heartwarming romantic mush, which I love. The ii lead actors are bully, only wish the music was a bit amend. It's no 'Somewhere in Fourth dimension' but then few fourth dimension travelling romantics films are. Definitely give this try, it won't disappoint.

Twenty miles from Boston, a quiet Sabbatum afternoon, a ton of garden work and an commodity on Kentuky Derby due, and I'm sitting hither bawling.

Information technology was amazing to turn to the Hallmark Aqueduct for a intermission, and find the showtime of this movie. I said, oh boy, another Christopher Reeve "Somewhere in Time," - I'm not going to lookout it, just information technology was such a pleasant suspension. A lovely, warm, romantic, sad, corny movie with great acting (David Dukes- War and Remembrance - was a marvelous pompous suitor). admittedly impossible plot, simply centre warming, and when it ended, I was still bawling. I haven't figured out why. But Gettysburg, a hundred plus year one-time woman one time a beautiful girl, the Civil War, a dislocated guy who invents computer games , was so oddball, that I loved it.. To escape into a fine fantasy romance, run across this flick, and experience good about it. I rarely cry, but this simple footling movie fabricated for Telly turned on my waterworks. Now, the garden is beautiful with iris, pansies and buckwheat mulch, and I'm dorsum to the Kentucky Derby article which I hope volition be middle warming for Giacomo and jockey Mike Smith. Watch this movie, and yous'll practice dandy things, too.
